10 Maltese Anglers graced the Sicilian Lago Magrostigma Rosolini lake for a fierce float competition with the Sicilian and Italian counterparts which reached a tally of 70 competitors. Rules for competition allowed for the usage of handpole or rod with reel as well as usage of float and single hook to be mandatory. With trout being worth 1000 points plus its weight and carp being worth 100 points many anglers sought to target trout right away.
The beginning of the match saw an instant movement of trout on some pegs which sought refuge in the shade and other pegs being more productive with carp. Every angler sought to be the best in their section of which there were 7 sections comprising of 10 anglers each. There were strong winds throughout the match and fish were active at 3 meters of depth so many anglers sought short rods to combat the winds as well as the fast paced and hungry fish who were very aggressive on some pegs.
Bait used was primarily 'camola' which is a beefed version of the local maggots as we know them as well as Earthworms. Trout was highly active on the Camola bait whilst carp were biting on both the Camola and the earthworms. Thick lines of 0.20mm and 0.16mm were used to meet the demands of this fast paced fishing whilst some anglers sought thinner lines to decieve the carp which was smaller and thus did not need such thicker line.
At the end of the three hour match the Maltese Anglers provided very promising results with Ryan Cassar coming third in section and 21st overall with a tally of 11carp, Adrian Nelson coming 1st in section and 6th overall with 1 trout and 12 carp, and Brady Sammut also winning his section coming in 2nd overall from a tally of 70 competitors with a staggering amount of 17 trout weighing in at almost 6 kilos. This proved to be a very fun and fruitful fishing experience with most Anglers novice to freshwater fishing which is absent on the Maltese Islands yet still being able to come home with great results, a medal or a throphy, and most importantly great memories with friends.
Special thanks to Ryan Cassar for the video and Marcus Sammut fir the write up.
